What causes Ascites?
Ascites is generally caused by liver disorders and cirrhosis of the liver. The body is unable to produce albumin and other proteins that provide osmotic pressure to draw fluid out of the peritoneal space causing fluid to leaks out from blood vessels.
Scarring due to liver cirrhosis increases pressure in the portal vein and forces blood to seep into the abdomen.
However ascites can also be caused by heart problems, lung disorders, abdominal cancers, pelvic cancers, depressed thyroid activity and lupus.
